A family lawyer should help you make informed decisions through a difficult transition. These five considerations can make your first discussions more useful.

1. Experience with your issues
Ask about the lawyer’s work on Ontario parenting, support, property or divorce matters relevant to your needs. Identify urgent deadlines and safety concerns early. A complex financial dispute and an agreed separation may require different approaches.
2. A clear explanation of options
Discuss negotiation, mediation and court proceedings. Ask what evidence and disclosure are needed, what can be addressed immediately, and what remains uncertain. Be cautious about promises of a guaranteed outcome.
3. Transparent costs and scope
Ask for written retainer terms covering fees, disbursements, billing and the work included. Discuss how costs will be monitored and whether a limited scope of assistance could meet your needs. Confirm any consultation charge before booking.
4. Reliable communication
Find out who will handle your file, how you will receive updates and how urgent messages are managed. You should be able to ask questions and understand the advice you receive.
5. Independent professional information
Check licensing information using the Law Society of Ontario directory. Read the lawyer’s professional biography and ask questions about relevant experience. Marketing claims alone are not a substitute for that discussion.
Before you book
Prepare a short chronology, copies of agreements and court documents, and a list of your priorities. Ontario’s family law services guide explains available public resources. Learn about Hashmi Law Group’s family and divorce law services or contact the office to discuss a consultation.
This is general information; advice for your matter requires a review of its circumstances.
