How to Choose a Family and Divorce Lawyer in Ontario

By Hashmi Law Group · · Content updated

Choosing a family lawyer is a practical decision about experience, communication and cost. A useful first consultation should help you understand your options and the next steps for your situation.

Identify the issues you need help with

Write down your concerns about separation or divorce, parenting arrangements, support, property and financial disclosure. Tell the lawyer about court documents, existing agreements and upcoming deadlines. Mention safety concerns at the outset so they can be addressed promptly.

Ask about relevant experience and a realistic plan

Ask whether the lawyer regularly handles matters like yours in Ontario. Discuss negotiation, mediation and court proceedings, including the reasons each option may be appropriate. Ask what information is needed before advice can be given, what the immediate priorities are, and who will do the work. A responsible discussion explains uncertainty rather than promising a result.

Understand fees and communication

Request a written explanation of the retainer, billing rates, possible disbursements and the scope of services. Ask how often you will receive updates and invoices, how urgent messages are handled, and how you can keep costs proportionate. Clarify whether an initial consultation has a fee before booking.

Prepare for the consultation

  • Bring a short chronology, identification and relevant court documents.
  • Gather agreements, recent income information and an outline of assets and debts.
  • Prepare questions about your children’s arrangements and immediate financial needs.
  • Check the lawyer’s licensing information in the Law Society of Ontario directory.
